Prologue

Darkness fills the stage. A spotlight illuminates Sara Smith as she moves forward through the dark. She carries a gun. As continues towards the front, dancers appear around her, moving to unheard music.

DIVA

I'm high above the city

I'm standing on the ledge

The view from here is pretty

And I step off the edge

She raises her gun, pointing it at something infront of her.

And now I'm falling, baby, through the sky,

through the sky

I'm falling, baby, through the sky

She then fires the gun. Blackout.

Act One

Scene 1Edit

Streets of New York. Spotlight on Jesse, who walks through a bad neighbourhood in Brooklyn.

Jesse:
There's a block on the edge of this town no one talks about
Where the train doesn't stop and the kids know they're not getting out
You live in a loop of smokes on the stoop, counting the coins you got
You work at a bar where all that you are is everything you're not

Someone tell me when I can start again
And rewrite this story

How long can I stay lost without a way to rewrite
I wish I could rewrite this story

Spotlight on Amanda, who pushes past people in Times Square.

Amanda:
Pretty face, pretty voice; pretty much someone they forget
Hard to tell me apart from the ten other girls they just met
"We can't see the hook, we can't sell the look", I hear it every day
"You won't be a star if you're who you are", so I just fade away

Make me someone new
Tell me what I do to rewrite this story

Both:
How long can I stay lost without a way to rewrite
I wish I could rewrite this story

Change every word of every line
Write any story but mine

Someone tell me when can I start again
And rewrite this story
Yeah, yeah

How long can I stay lost without a way to rewrite
Rewrite
I wish I could rewrite this story

Amanda enters a record company as Jesse enters the bar.

Scene 2Edit

Amanda stands before a music producer, he reads over her headshot.

MUSIC PRODUCER

Whenever you're ready.

She nodds and music begins, Amanda prepares herself. She is very nervous.

Amanda:
If you start the party
Don't end up leaving early
'Cause I've been waiting for you all night long

If you're falling
I'll make it easy for you
'Cause I've been waiting for them all night long

The Producers office fades into Amanda's concert. Fans appear and dance along to the song, she starts to interact with them.

You've got me dizzy
It's quite a show
With all this spinning
I won't let me let you go

Oh, I, no, I think I could be good for you!
I could be good for you!

If you pay the deejay
Don't waste another dance tune
Come on over while they play our song

Make conversation
Don't waste time with excuses
Because they're useless and I've been waiting all night long

You've got me dizzy
It's quite a show
With all this spinning
I won't let me let you go

Oh, I, oh, I think I could be good for you!
I could be good for you!

I, oh, I think I could be good for you!
I could be good for you!

Stand up, I won't mess around
And I'm tired of all this playin'
Not known for backing down
Until I get my way

Too bad I'm not giving up
I'm not one for taking it slow
See when it's all said and done
Then you're ready to go!

Oooohhh-ooooohh...

Pushing, pulling, play the game
Who are we to say no, anyway?

I, oh, I think I could be good for you!
I could be good for you!

I, oh, I think I could be good for you!
I could be good for you!

I, I, oh, I could be good for you!
I could be good for you!

Oh, I, oh!
Yeah!
Woooo...
Yeah, yeah

The fans fade away and Amanda stands alone in front of the Producer. He considers for a moment.

MUSIC PRODUCER

Amanda, do you mind if I call you Amanda? You're a very beautiful girl. You also have a lovely voice... However, I don't think you are wht we are looking for here. I'm sorry, but thank you for coming in.

The Producer exits, leaving Amanda alone.

Scene 3Edit

3 AM. A depressed Amanda is walking along the Brooklyn Bridge. She still holds her headshot and demo CD. She looks across the city.

Amanda:
I'm high above the city
I'm standing on the ledge
The view from here is pretty
And I step off the edge

And now I'm falling, baby, through the sky, through the sky
I'm falling, baby, through the sky
It's my calling, baby, don't you cry, don't you cry
I'm falling down through the sky

Toward the street that I'm from
Oh, Broadway, here I come
Broadway, here I come

She stops in the centre of the bridge, looking across the sea. She throws the CD and photo into the water.

Amanda:
The pressure, it increases
The closer that I get
I could almost go to pieces
But I'm not quite there yet

See I've been brave in crazy weather
Drowning out my cries
I pull myself together
I'm focused on the prize

I'm falling, baby, through the sky, through the sky
I'm falling, baby, through the sky
It's my calling, baby, don't you cry, don't you cry
I'm falling down through the sky

It's a tune you can't hum
Oh, Broadway here I come
Mmmmm....

Will I remain the same or will I change a little bit?
Will I feel broken or totally complete?
Will I retain my name when I'm the biggest, hugest hit?
Or will I blend in with the rest of the street?

The people all are pointing
I bet they'd never guess
That the saint that they're anointing
Is frightened of the mess

But even though I fear it
I'm playing all my cards
Baby, you are gonna hear it
When I give them my regards

Jesse, who has just knocked off from work, is walking across the Brooklyn bridge. Under his breath he hums a tune. Up ahead stands a depressed Amanda, Jesse stops. Though he stopped humming, the tune is continued by Amanda.

Amanda:
I'm falling, baby, through the sky, through the sky
I'm falling, baby, through the sky
It's my calling, baby, don't you cry, don't you cry
I'm falling down through the sky

And I refuse to go numb
Oh, Broadway, here I come
Broadway, here I come
Broadway, here I come
Broadway, Broadway, here I come
Here I come!

Amanda begins to lift herself up, standing on the edge of the rails. She begins to cry. Jesse, aware of what she is about to do, closes the distance.

And the last thing I hear
As the impact grows near
Is it a scream or a cheer?
Well, never mind, I'll never find out
'Cause Broadway, I am here!

She goes to jump, but Jesse's hand wraps around her waist, pulling her back.

AMANDA

What!?

The two fall to the ground, she rolls away quickly.

AMANDA

Jesse! What are you doing?

JESSE

What am I doing? What the hell are you doing trying to jump off the Brooklyn bridge?

Amanda goes to reply, but breaks down, hugging Jesse to her.

AMANDA

Another producer said no. That was the sixth one this month. I can't keep doing this anymore!

JESSE

I don't understand, you're life is perfect you have everything. Why does-

AMANDA

No, I don't. I just feel, that if I can't be famous, i'm a nobody. Nothing else matters.

JESSE

Really, what about me? I'm right infront of you... You mean so much to so many people, why do you let this effect you so much?

AMANDA

...I need to prove that I can do this. Not just to me.

Jesse stands, holding out his hand to Amanda.

JESSE

Well, you can take my hand. Live for another day and let there be another chance to open up. Or I can turn away and  you can jump. Which one?

Amanda takes his hand.

Scene 4Edit

A single spotlight lights a piano in the middle of the stage. The Diva enters and cheering begins. She sits at the piano and the cheering dies down.

Diva:
I could fall in love with you
I could fall in love
In my dreams your dreams come true
Say you'll dream of us

At night when the bright stars are burning high over Manhattan
All washed out in neon
And hidden from view
But when the power goes out and you look up from Brooklyn
Will you reach for me
Reaching out for you
Oh, will you reach for me
Reaching out for you
Reaching out for you

The Diva walks away from the piano and walks towards the front of the stage. Dancers appear from behind the piano and perform behind her. A microphone is lowered before her and the Diva takes it, being hoisted into the air.

I can tell you're unprepared
For what will happen next
Nothing now could change my mind
Or make me want you less

Part of the Diva's dress falls away and becomes a harness.

Do you want this tonight when the bright stars are burning high over Manhattan
All washed out in neon
And hidden from view
But when the power goes out and you look up from Brooklyn
Will you reach for me
Reaching out for you
Oh, will you reach for me
Reaching out for you

Would you reach for me
I could wait for you
Would you reach for me

The Diva's stage disappears to form Jesse's Apartment. Amanda sits on a laptop showing Jesse the Diva's performance.

Bright stars are burning high over Manhattan
All washed out in neon
And hidden from view
But when the power goes out and you look up from Brooklyn
Will you reach for me
Reaching out for you
Oh, will you reach for me
Reaching out for you
Will you reach for me
Reaching out for you

Reaching out for you
I’m reaching out for you
I’m reaching out for you

The Diva bows at the end and struts off stage.

JESSE

This is who you wanna be? Like her? Gaga, Lana... Diva. They're totally fake!

AMANDA

They're not fake. She didn't like who she was, so she reinvented herself. People do it all the time, see?

A teenage girl, dressed in a letterman jacket, glasses and pony tail, appears.

Amanda:
Way back before she hit the scene
And she became the indie queen
She was a girl with nothing big to say
Her mouth was full of silver spoons
Singing her dime a dozen tunes
'Til she came up with something new to play

Dancers begin to transform the girl, turning her into a beautiful brunette in a flowing dress.

A girl so scarred, a pain so real
A life so hard, becomes a song you feel
Her tracks were leaked and all the hipsters freaked
She made herself a star

She wants, she wants, she wants to be original
She will, she will become something remarkable
Who cares, who cares, who cares what stunt she has to pull
She'll be remade as somebody original

Another girl reappears in sweats. The dancers again begin her transformation into a punk rock blonde.

Way back before the interviews
Before her music made the news
She was a nothing no one talked about
A mousy girl behind the mic
One more vanilla look-alike
'Til she decided to stand out

And now it's crazy clothes, a brand new name
A fixed up nose and monster fame
Though she might say that she was born this way
She made herself a star

Amanda with Jesse:
She wants, she wants, she wants to be original
She will, she will become something remarkable
Who cares, who cares, who cares what stunt she has to pull
She'll be remade as

Amanda:
Somebody original

You can wipe away everything you are
Wake up tomorrow as a star

There was a girl who blended in
That was the way her life had been
'Til she decided to be someone else

Amanda with Jesse:
She wants, she wants, she wants to be original
She will, she will become something remarkable
Who cares, who cares, who cares what stunt she has to pull
She'll be remade as

Amanda:
Somebody original
Somebody original
Somebody original
Somebody original

Scene 5Edit

The next day, Jesse sits at his piano playing a song. Amanda lies a sleep on his bed.

Jesse:
Oh, music you made me hear, such music
Without you hear to guide me,
I feel as though I'll fly away

Amanda stirs and soon sits, listening to the song. When he finishes she applauds.

Sorry, that's the word I want to sing to you
The other word is stay
To hear the love I meant to say

AMANDA

Did you write that?

JESSE

Ah... Yea, I know it's not that great, I just-

AMANDA

That was a beautiful! Do you have anymore.

JESSE

It's really not... But yea I do.

He grabs the folder of music above his piano and she goes through it.

JESSE

Are you feeling better now?

AMANDA

Yea I am. Thank you. Though, i'm sorry for stealing your bed. Did you get any sleep?

JESSE

Nah, but I can always crash later on.

A thought crosses Amanda's mind, putting the folder down and crosses to Jesse. She rubs his arm and kisses him. Jesse is suprised but goes with it. Blackout.

Amanda and Jesse now both lie in bed, Jesse asleep. Amanda slowly pushes the sheets back and quietly crosses to get dressed. When she is ready, she grabs Jesse's music folder and the sheet music on the piano. With one last look at Jesse, she leaves. Jesse stirs and makes a grab for Amanda, but she's not there. He rolls back away and falls back to sleep.

Scene 6Edit

Jesse's apartment, 3 months later. Jesse sits at his piano, furiously writing. Mary sits next to him watching.

MARY

Why didn't you tell me three months ago! I can't believe you haven't done anything about Amanda stealing your songs! Isn't there like a law against that are something? You could sue her, and with the money her family has... Imagine what we could do with that!

JESSE

Mary, shut it.

MARY

Seriously though! I know you have been in love with her since High School, but it doesn't give you a reason to not at least take them back. Who knows how much they're worth!

JESSE

They're not worth anything, they aren't good.

MARY

So why keep writing them?

JESSE

It just makes me feel better.

MARY

Have you at least try to call her?

JESSE

Yes, but I can't get through.

Mary's phone begins to ring, a ladies voice filling the silnce. As she searches for it, Jesse stops writing.

JESSE

What is that?

MARY

Just my phone, probably mom checking up.

JESSE

No. What's that song?

MARY

'All I Know' by Nina, she is a new singer. Isn't it just the best song? It's only just came out but it's already called the song of the year. And she already has an album coming out soon! I better answer it. Hey mom, yea, what's up?

Mary fades out as she crosses off stage. Jesse stays seated in shock.

JESSE

Amanda...?

Jesse grabs his music and clothes and chucks them in a bag. His apartment disapears.

Jesse:
I thought I was hopeless, I thought I was broken
I struggled to laugh when the whole room was joking
I'd wait in the cold, but the door wouldn't open 'til I
'Til I heard your voice in a dream

And nothing comes easy when everyone's rushing
The signal's got speed but there's no real connection
I tried reaching out, it was just my reflection 'til I
'Til I heard your voice in a dream

So sing to me and I will forgive you
For taking my heart in the suitcase you packed
Sing to me like the lights didn't blind you
Like you blinded me when I heard your voice in a dream

And I could have loved you but you had the hunger
For life in the lights, so when they called your number
I couldn't compete with the spell you were under
Still I, I hear your voice in my dreams

So sing to me and I will forgive you
For taking my heart in the suitcase you packed
Sing to me like the lights didn't blind you
Like you blinded me when I heard your voice in a dream

Jesse arrives in LA, at a small concert where Nina is promoting her upcoming album. Fans circle Nina. Jesse fights to get to her.

Nina:
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

Jesse:
I thought I could love you but you had the hunger

Nina:
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

Jesse:
Oh, nothing comes easy when everyone's rushing

Nina:
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

Jesse:
I thought I could love you, I thought I could love you

Jesse sneaks backstage and as Nina steps off stage, he confronts her.

JESSE

Hello Amanda.

Scene 7Edit

Nina's Penthouse apartment. Jesse sits on a couch as Nina changes.

NINA

I knew you'd find me at one point, but you took your time. It was the name that threw you?

JESSE

Actually, it took me 30 seconds. I heard your...my song and caught the first flight here.

Nina enters.

NINA

Oh, the song.

JESSE

My song. Which you stole... How'd you do it?

NINA

I waited till you fell asleep and-

JESSE

No, how'd you get to this point in only a few months? New name, city. Your parents didn't even know where you had gone.

NINA

It's amazing what having an amazing song can do.

Nina sits next to Jesse.

NINA

So you're here cause you're pissed. How much do you want?

JESSE

I don't want money. I wanted to know what happened to my songs, I wanted to know where you were.

NINA

Well, here I am. And i'm glad that someone cared enough to come searching.

JESSE

It wasn't too hard in the end. Your face is everywhere.Your voice is on every radio, is a top seller on iTunes. Number one on Billboard... Don't understand how nobody has found you.

NINA

To be fair it took you nearly four months. But i'm glad you're here.

JESSE

Really?

NINA

Of course! I need a few more songs for my album.

JESSE

Oh, well, couldn't anyone write you songs. This is LA. There should be like millions of them.

NINA

There are millions, but none are as good as you. You write songs for me, and you can have a name in this City. Everything you have ever wanted...

JESSE

How do you know what I want?

NINA

You write these songs for a reason. They're aren't ones that are meant to be played in pubs to twenty people. They're songs that are supposed to be performed to sold out crowds all over the world.

JESSE

What gave you the rite to choose who my songs should be performed too?

Nina moves closer, rubbing his arm.

NINA

So you won't write anymore songs for me, even though you know that at this moment millions across the world are listening to that song, are feeling connected to that song and are absolutely hooked on that song?

JESSE

...Millions?

NINA

Millions.

JESSE

How many songs?

NINA

Two. By next week.

JESSE

Ok.

Nina squeals, wraps her arms around Jesse and kisses him.

NINA

Thank you.

JESSE

Anything for you.

Scene 8

Streets of Los Angeles. Nina talks on her cellphone.

NINA

I have my song writer working on a couple more songs, they should be done in time. No, he's really good. He wrote all the others. I'll go and check in on him now ok.

Nina hangs up.

Nina's Penthouse Apartment. Jesse sits at her piano, sheet music scatter around him.

JESSE

I wish you were a bad girl... I wish you did something unforgivable.

Nina enters.

NINA

Hey Jesse. Sorry I couldn't make it back here all day. You written anything?

JESSE

I started working on somehting, but it's still... In process.

NINA

Ok, let's hear what you got.

JESSE

You wanna try?

NINA

Yea, ok.

Nina:
I wish you were a bad man
I wish you made it easier
I wish you'd done something unforgivable

'Cause holding onto you is all that I can do until
I learn the hands around my throat are my own

Nina goes to a club to try out the song, gaining a good reception she moves on to the recording studio.

Nina:
Don't let me know if it hurts
If it hurts you
I don't want to be your friend that you turn to
That you won't pull me close
But you can't let me go
Don't let me know
Don't let me know
Don't let me know
Don't let me know

Nina & Jesse:
I wish I never met you
Now I gotta forget again
I wish you didn't know me
So damn well
Mmmmm....

Don't tell me that you're scared
Every time that I'm not [she isn't] there
Don't you open up my heart again

The song is quickly leaked and fans swarm to download the song. Nina goes to shoot the music video, by performing another small concert. Jesse watches from the side.

Nina:
Oh, don't let me know if it hurts
If it hurts you
I don't want to be your friend that you turn to
That you won't pull me close
But you can't let go
Don't let me know
Don't let me know
Don't let me know
Don't let me know

If you think there's a chance you can fall again
That you've tried and you've failed to stop loving me

Nina & Jesse:
Don't let me know if it hurts
If it hurts you
I don't want to be your friend that you turn to
That you won't pull me close
But you can't let go

Nina:
Don't let me know
Don't let me know
Don't let me know

The concert finishes and Nina leaves. Jesse stays behind.

Jesse:
Don't let me know

Scene 9Edit

Nina and Jesse attend a party. As Hollywood A-Listers talk with one another, Jesse stands back. Nina notices.

NINA

You won't make it at all in this town if you just stand in the back. Look, there's Gaga! Taylor is over there with Alicia. And Katy is with Rihanna by the pool! Isn't this amazing?

JB appears with a crowd of girls, he notices Nina and Jesse.

JB

Is that the amazing Nina? JB Pearson, from Colombus records.

NINA

Oh, of course! You're the Producer for The Diva!

JB

That's me. May I just say, 'Don't Let Me Know' was amazing. I can't wait to hear the full album.

NINA

Thanks. I'm hoping it fulfills everyone expectations.

JB

I don't doubt it will. That being said, I heard there is still one or two songs left to be recorded. This correct?

NINA

Yes it is. Where have you heard this?

JB

I have my sources.

JESSE

Why does it matter to you?

NINA

Jesse, don't be rude.

JB

No, it's fine. Man goes straight to the point. How would you feel about doing a collaboration with Diva?

NINA

Really? With Diva? That would be a dream come true! Of course.

JB

Only if your manager is fine with it however.

NINA

You're talking to her, and she's perfectly fine with it.

JB

You manage yourself? Well, we can't have that.

He hands her his business card.

JB

Give me a call, it's about time I took on a new client. Why don't you put on a little show for us?

NINA

Oh, right now?

JB

Yes, i'm sue everyone would love to hear you.

JB whistles, the party-goers turn to him.

JB

Ladies and gentlemen. I have a special treat for you. An impromptu performance by the upcoming artist Nina! Let's give her a hand.

The crowd claps. Nina turns to Jesse.

NINA

What do I do? Which song?

JESSE

Um...

NINA

How about Pretender? If they like it, we'll put it on the album?

JESSE

If you want...

NINA:
Your dirty kiss, you tried to pull me right in
Your little tricks, you're used to winning
You play a part - dancer in the dark
Saying anything to try and steal away a heart

Now you got her, she's lying up in your bed
Don't seem to stop you, you keep on calling
You're out of line, waster of my time
I just wanna know how you can fall asleep at night

Hey, baby, you're just a pretender
I'm not crazy, should've known much better
Whatever you do, always twisting the truth
Well the table's 'bout to turn right back on you

You must be drunk, did you forget your way home?
I'm not the one who's scared of being alone
Got me confused with someone who needs you
Might be the joker, I'm nobody's fool

Hey, baby, you're just a pretender
Don't mistake me, you might think you're clever, boy
Whatever you do, always twisting the truth
Well the table's 'bout to turn right back on you, uh

Take all your lies, find you somebody else
I got my strength, got my pride in myself
So, what now, who you gonna mess around?
I can tell you right now - ain't gonna be me

Hey, baby, you're just a pretender
I'm not crazy, should've known much better
Whatever you do, always twisting the truth
Well the table's 'bout to turn right back on you
Well the table's 'bout to turn right back on you

The crowd applauds, JB loudest.

JB

Amazing, simpy amazing. Don't you all agree? I think it's time you met the Diva.

The Diva parts the crowd. She greets the celebrities around her, before noticing Nina JB. She struts towards the couple.

DIVA

JB, let's go, this party is such a bore.

JB

Diva, can I introduce you to the wonderful Nina?

DIVA

Oh.... Nina, darling, it's about time we met.

She smiles and kisses Nina's cheeks.

NINA

Oh, yes. I know you've heard this hundreds of times but, you are my inspiration.

DIVA

I may hear that hundreds of times, but I never tire of it.

The two laugh. Diva notices Jesse.

DIVA

Who is this?

NINA

Oh, this is my writing partner, Jesse.

DIVA

Pleasure. And i'm guessing you know my Manager JB. Well since we've all met, how about we get some drinks?

Diva calls over a server with drinks following. JB hands them out.

DIVA

Did you speak to her?

JB

Just finished.

DIVA

So are we ago then?

NINA

Of course! I would be honoured to collaborate with you.

DIVA

Likewise. Well, I'll guess we'll be seeing each other soon!

She leaves again.

JB

I look forward to hearing from you.

He follows.

NINA

I can't believe that. Do you think Pretender would be good as a duet? Or do you think you could have I'm Not Sorry ready to go soon?

JESSE

The songs aren't written as duets Amanda. I write them for you only.

NINA

Look, I get it. I know how you feel about me. I've known for awhile, but Jesse, this is my job. This could make my career. She has five times as many fans as I do. Just think about that!

JESSE

You know how I feel...?

NINA

It's obvious. I need to go socialise.

Nina goes to leave.

JESSE

How do you feel for me?

She turns back, flirtingly she approaches Jesse.

NINA

At the moment, I feel that anything could happen.

She kisses him again before walking off. Jesse is left shocked, but happy.
